Sugar Mas 2K10/2K11 J'ouvert!

It’s approximately fifty six (56) days to the official opening of Carnival in sweet sugar city St. Kitts! If any of you guys are like me you are already anxious and could hardly wait. From the 17th of December 2010 to the 3rd of January 2010 the federation will be filled with a buzz of activities including fetes, pageants and calypso shows and other events to celebrate the carnival and Christmas season. Arguably the most looked forward to event of our carnival is the Jóuvert morning Jump Up and this year we can expect added excitement with the emergence of two new J’ouvert troupes namelyMudsunami and the Red Devils!  With these added options available the question is to be asked, Which Jóuvert troupe will you be playing with for this carnival?!?

Its Working??

When I came to Trinidad for university in 2008 one of my hopes were  that by the time I returned to the federation in 2011 the global economy would have already began to make a positive turn from its recessional state over the last few years. I somewhat wanted to “ride out the storm” while in university. Recent worldwide reports and headlines have been indicating that for the most part the recession seems to be over and even have indicated growth trends for different major economies. If this is so it is certainly good and welcomed news.

Pre- Jan 25th (The Kittitian equivalent of September 11th) the government of St. Kitts & Nevis painted a very positive economic picture in the minds of citizens, or at least they certainly tried to. They did so even while numerous other intellects and reports suggested differently. We constantly heard the terms surpluses, increase in passenger arrivals, employment, increase in construction, etc. The idea was given that St. Kitts & Nevis although one of the smallest and most dependent and vulnerable economies in the world, somehow managed to be semi-immune to the effects of the global economic woes. It was working they lamented, “E A WUK!”

Post 25/1 we have seen some interesting developments in the federation. Mass Layoffs, forced retirements, budget cuts (less money for police, hospital, roads etc), privatization of government corporations and other austerity measures. To top that off, there will now be the implementation of a Value Added Tax (VAT) effective November 1st. In a recent news item (link will be posted below) an IMF report indicated that St. Kitts will have the lowest growth rate in the region and last among the 150 countries listed over the next 5 years. Now for me, and other returning and soon to be returning university students like myself this next 5 year period is a very critical time in our lives and for our development. In light of all the recent economic developments I alluded to earlier, where would this leave us?

It appears as though I was able to “ride out” the global economic storm and will be going home right in time for the St. Kitts economic meltdown. And here it was that I thought it was working (sarcasm). What a difference one day makes.

Pow Pow Pow

And the MADNESS continues…

Earlier today while taking in some of the carnival music being played via freedomskn radio in St. Kitts my ‘wilders’ was abruptly interrupted by the DJ claiming that he had breaking news. To my surprise (sarcasm) there was a report of a shooting incident at newton ground village apparently involving three men.

The DJ was fortunate enough to have gotten a call from an eyewitness/survivor of the “wild wild west” type showdown who gave a recap of the story. The caller claimed he was driving through the island and upon entering the said village drove right into the gunfight. Apparently the gunmen were right in the middle of the MAIN ROAD shooting at each other. While this was happening there were school kids returning home and patrons at a nearby water retailer! The caller said he was left to “duck down” in his vehicle, put it in overdrive and dash through the gunfight. Can you say MADNESS?!?

After hearing this story I logged unto sknvibes.com to see if there might be any information posted about the incident only to find out that there was another shooting incident that took place in New Town earlier that day. Sigh!

Something definitely has to be done. This has got to stop!

Aston Martin music

This song certainly is a motivator for me. The main reason being that an Aston Martin Vantage is my dream car and hearing this gives me the drive to do what it takes to (legally) attain it. It can be a motivator for you as well, just use the car as a represent your dream then go get it!. Enjoy.

ROZAY!
